![]() ![]() ![]() I'm not sure about other countries, but their cartridges are about the most expensive of all printer brands (after all, the money is on these parts, and not the printers themselves). For instance, generally I tend to recommend HP printers to new Linux users as they're the most painless to setup and use, and enjoy an official driver straight from HP, but there's a catch with HP products (on any platform) and that's maintenance costs associated with them. At any rate, the general consensus that I have to gather from the many friends, family and users that I have spoken to with regards to Linux and printing, seems to be that printing is still such a thorn on Linux' adoption side, and we're talking about consumer-level home-grade printers, not Small-office and professional corporate grade printers, Inkjets in particular.Īmong the reasons most frequently given to me are that printers misbehave, lack the same features (mostly control over quality and some other adjustments) and that the printers tend to use more ink on Linux than Windows, rendering the TCO more expensive due to cartridge expenses (we may argue this point to hell and back again and never reach a consensus, that's not the point here). I even engaged with one of my "converts" friends into a discussion about TCO of Linux Vs Windows in terms and from the point of view printing exclusively (tilting the balance towards Windows having the upper hand), and though this discussion might be seen as a non-issue by many, after all, the same printers are in many cases designed to be used on Windows (and even lack Mac drivers or feature-parity in Win and Mac, not to mention Linux). I myself have been "victim" of the many bugs that hunt in the printer spool recently and through out my most of my Linux user experience. Recently I have been approached by many of the poeple that I have helped setup their machines with Linux either with Fedora or any other distribution regarding the always sensitive matter of printing.
